After a worship set we dove right into the lesson. The theme for the week is "In Transit- Maximize Your Moments". We live in a fast paced society and must take time to consider if we are making the most of the moments in our lives. The theme is based on Romans 10:17 that says "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ". Each night there is a life question for us to look at and this night's question was "Can I ask Jesus to help me or someone I love?" We broke the students up into 3 groups giving each a set of scripture and stuff to discuss. Then we discussed all the scriptures together as a whole. The following are three points we looked at to answer the life question.
1) Jesus is willing to help us and those we love- Matthew 8:1-13
-Just as Jesus was willing to help those in these verses, Jesus is willing to help us.
-We can approach Jesus about our cares and concerns even when we think that nobody else cares.
-We discussed some of the excuses we give for not going to Jesus with our cares and concerns and how silly that is.
2) Jesus cares about whatever is a concern to you- Matthew 8:14-17
-Jesus displays in these verses how He cares about the things that we care about no matter how big or small they may seem.
-We talked about the people in our lives that we know care about us and how we know they care.
-We discussed why we do not trust that Jesus cares about our worries and instead hold on to them, which is silly and weighs us down.
3) Jesus can calm the storms in our lives- Matthew 8:23-27
-As the disciples were scared about the storm, we discussed the things in our lives that scare us.
-As we look at how Jesus calmed this physical storm, we can be at peace in knowing that Jesus can also calm the storms in our lives. We must understand that Jesus may not change our circumstances around us, but He will be there for us giving us peace and strength through any situation if we allow Him to.
We closed the night in prayer as I encouraged the students to think about any tough situation that they may be facing. I encouraged them to then give the situation over to Jesus as we know from Hebrews 4:16 that we can approach Jesus with confidence. He will never leave us nor forsake us, He will never let you down. He may answer your prayer in a different way and timing than you want but He knows what is best for you.
This was a great night as we kicked off Vacation Bible School. I believe that God is going to do some great things in our lives this week. My favorite moment of the night was when one of the students shared his heart on a specific unreached people group but also challenged us all in reaching the lost. He gave a brief testimony of what God is doing in his life. I never get tired of hearing about how God is making a difference in people's lives! Here are a few pictures from the night.
